A creative way to to discover your team's skills, potential and ambitions in 7 steps.
The ‘skills market’
You can do this next exercise called ‘skills market’ during a team-building day or at your next team catch-up, either face-to-face or online using tools like Miro, Mural or Butter. Swipe to read the first step.
Step 1
Tell the group that they are in a market, setting up a stall to buy and sell their skills.
Step 2
Take a large piece of flip chart paper and invite each person in your group to draw their own stall. Each stall should contain the following:
Current skills (it should answer the question: ‘What allows me to do my job?’).
Hidden skills (skills others in the group might not know you have).
Desired skills (skills you want to develop or learn).
Step 3
Remind the group that the creative design of the market stall is not important and won’t be judged. However, encourage participants to add a fun twist to their market stall if they would like!
Step 4
Ask the group to spend some time completing each section of the stall with their current, hidden, and desired skills.
Step 5
Once everyone is done drawing their market stall, invite them to stick it on the wall for everyone to see.
Step 6
As a group, visit each other’s market stall and ask the ‘marketer’ to share their skills.
As each person shares their market stall, encourage others in the group to leave their initials next to the skill they can help the marketer develop or next to the skill they want to buy and develop themselves.
Step 7
Make sure you capture any actions and assign names and deadlines.
Grow together
This workshop tactic helps you identify which skills are available in your team and where people would like to improve. More importantly, it creates an opportunity for your team to support each other in growing new skills while fostering a culture of learning.
